I traveled to the Ixcan to interview some of the internally displaced, expecting to hear horror stories of their abuse by government forces. However, in one particularly memorable interview, I was ambushed by a group ladies who were critical of the government for delays in infrastructure projects.

They brushed aside my questions about the horrors of the 80's. They mostly wanted to talk about how mad they were that the government hadn't built the road that was promised them, or hadn't provided the pilas and the potable water they said they would.

They still hated and mistrusted the government, but it was because the government had failed to deliver on practical matters, not for human rights abuses.begonianoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9424895.post-60821911300295953652015-03-13T00:52:37.603+00:002015-03-13T00:52:37.603+00:00No, this violence is largely a consequence of Amer...No, this violence is largely a consequence of America's cack-handed 'War on Drugs' and has little connection with Guatemala's long struggle to restore political legitimacy.
As true as it gets.
