Semana Santa: Pic of the Day



There appears to be an urban legend that these members of the sacred processions are real jailbirds. While this might have happened on occasion in the past, it is not the norm.

Anyway, here in Antigua prisoners released on a day pass tend to be out murdering bishops rather than participating in religious festivities!

hehe, a facetious little reference to Sgt. Obdulio Villanueva, one of the murderers of Bishop Juan Verardi whose not so watertight alibi (as it turned out) was that he was in jail here in Antigua at the time for the extrajudicial execution of our local milkman.

It seems the prison governor had a habit of just letting his charges out at the weekends; indeed he only really cared that they turned up for morning roll call. Villanueva eventually ended up in the kind of prison one never tends to get our of:
