Pepys 1660 (7)

So into London by water, and in Fish Street my wife and I bought a bit of salmon for 8d. and went to the Sun Tavern and ate it, where I did promise to give her all that I have in the world but my books, in case I should die at sea.

En caso que me truene...

I warm to this idea of being able to buy fresh fish and then take it along to the local gastro-pub for preparation and consumption.

Easter one year, I was visiting a little sand spit on Yucatan's west coast. The white plastic chair, open air grill sold its fish on the fin, swimming around in a water tank. Pick the one you want, the cook would spear it with a big fork, gut it and plop it on the wood grill. Served on a platter with vegetables and beer by the gallon jug. I did not see one gringo that day at Isla de Arena, my understanding is that my fellows have not found it yet.

Sounds wonderful. Gulf coast of the Yucatan is very special in terms of seafood. My understanding is that most of the prawns sold on the Caribbean side have been carried across the peninsula.

Arena is at the end of a twenty mile long causeway through Mangrove swamp, you can still see the oil from the Mexican blowout from the 70s but the fishing seems to have recovered.
