At the end of the day that rather pointless shipwreck scene in Kingdom of Heaven, turns out to be nothing less than the original opening as conceived by screenscribbler William Monahan. Ridley Scott persuaded him to kick-off the story with Balian located in a gloom-ridden French landscape, but somehow the shipwreck stayed. A cinematic spandrel?
In another early draft the film commenced with two modern day reporters taking cover in Godfrey's tomb while assorted local religious groups attempt to kill each other outside.
