A very creditable fourth place, which we would have achieved either on this — the official scale — or the one the Americans were using until late-ish today in Tokyo when they won the Omnium then the Basketball, and thus snuck past China. 

We medalled in 18 of the 26 sports we entered.

That Team GB’s final victory came at the expense of the Chinese — along with the way we took one of their Golds in the diving in the first week — is bound to have made us especially unpopular in Beijing right now — almost on a par with sending what remains of the Royal Navy to drift around in the South China Sea.
